Cursive B (Capital & Lowercase)
Learning b in cursive trips up more people than almost any other lowercase letter. It starts like a cursive l, then ends with a tiny curl at the midline that changes how the next letter joins. The capital B has its own surprise: in traditional cursive it doesn't connect to the next letter at all.
On this page you'll see both forms on handwriting lines, step-by-step strokes for each, the most common mistakes and a free practice worksheet. Everything follows traditional US school cursive, the style most American classrooms teach.
If you only need a cursive B for a profile or a message, tap one of the symbols below to copy it.

How to Write a Capital B in Cursive
- Begin with a small hook. Start on the left, a little above the midline, and flick a short curved stroke up and to the right until it reaches the top line.
- Pull the stem down. From the top line, draw one long, straight, slanted stroke down to the baseline. This is the backbone of the B.
- Go back to the top. Return to the top of the stem. You can retrace the stem upward or lift your pencil and place it there, whichever feels steadier.
- Make the upper bump. Curve out to the right and down, then turn back in toward the stem and make a tiny loop right on the midline.
- Make the lower bump. Swing out again in a bigger, rounder curve that drops to the baseline, then curl back to the left and stop just short of the stem.
How to Write a Lowercase b in Cursive
- Lead in from the baseline. Start on the baseline, or where the last letter ended, and make a long slanted upstroke toward the top line.
- Loop at the top line. Curve over to the left at the top line and come back down, crossing your upstroke to make a slim loop.
- Drop to the baseline. Continue straight down along the slant until you reach the baseline.
- Round the bottom. Curve up and to the right in a small bump that rises to the midline.
- Finish with a curl. At the midline, curl the stroke back in toward the loop and stop with a tiny check. This curl is where the next letter starts.
Common Mistakes With Cursive B
Most problems with b come from the ending stroke, not the loop. Watch for these.
- Dropping the curl. Without the small check at the midline, a lowercase b looks like an l followed by a stray stroke. Pause at the midline and curl in.
- Joining from the baseline. After a b, the next letter starts from the midline, not the baseline. Dipping down first adds a bump that looks like an extra u.
- Closing the bottom into a circle. The bump of the b stays open at the top. If you close it, the letter reads as an l joined to an o.
- A fat loop. Keep the top loop narrow. A wide loop makes the b look clumsy and crowds the letter before it.
- Joining the capital B. The capital ends with its lower curve tucked beside the stem. Lift your pencil and start the next letter fresh.
- Uneven bumps. On the capital, the upper bump should be smaller than the lower one, with the little loop sitting right on the midline.
Joining the Cursive Lowercase b
The capital B in this style doesn't join. Its last curve ends next to the stem, so you lift your pencil and begin the next letter with its usual lead-in, as in Ben or Bella.
The cursive lowercase b is different. It joins on both sides: the stroke comes in from the baseline at the start and leaves from the midline at the end. That high exit is the key. In rabbit the double b shows it clearly, because the curl of the first b runs straight across and up into the loop of the second.
Joining into a b after a high-ending letter like o, w or v works the same way in reverse. The stroke leaves the o at the midline and rises straight into the tall loop, as in robot. In baby you get both joins in one short word.

The symbols here are Unicode letters with a script look, not joined handwriting. Each one is a separate character, so they won't link together, but they paste into most apps, names and captions.

Words That Start With B
Words with b are great practice because the letter after it always joins from the midline. Start short, then move on to words with a double b or a b in the middle.
- Short words: bed, bat, bus, big, box, bag, bee, bun
- Longer words: bird, baby, ball, bread, butter, button, beach, brown
- Double b and middle b: rabbit, bubble, cabin, table, robot, number, ribbon, hobby
- Names and places: Ben, Bella, Brian, Bianca, Boston, Brazil, Berlin, Bob
Practice the pair "be" again and again. The midline join from b into e is the one most people get wrong, and it shows up in words like best, been and before.
Printable Cursive B Practice Sheet
Print the sheet and trace the grey letters first, then fill the empty lines on your own. Every row starts with a solid model. Focus on the little curl at the midline; once it becomes automatic, your b stops looking like an l.
The sheet prints on its own, without the rest of this page, on US Letter or A4 paper.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you write b in cursive?
Start on the baseline, swing up into a tall, narrow loop at the top line, come straight down to the baseline, curve up to the midline and finish with a small curl.
How do you write a cursive capital B?
Make a small hook up to the top line, pull a slanted stem down to the baseline, go back to the top, then draw a small upper bump with a loop at the midline and a bigger lower bump that curls back toward the stem.
Does the capital B in cursive connect to the next letter?
Not in traditional US cursive. The lower curve ends beside the stem, so you lift and start the next letter separately. The lowercase b does connect.
Why does my cursive b look like an l?
The ending curl is missing or too small. A cursive b lowercase needs that check at the midline; it's the one detail that tells it apart from l.
