X With Symbols and Decorations
X is also a mark, a multiplication sign and a kiss, so it has more look-alike symbols than almost any letter. Below you'll find crosses, ballot marks, Roman numerals and decorated X letters.
Where People Use a Fancy X
Only a handful of names start with X, like Xavier, Ximena and Xander, so a stylish X is used more as a symbol than as an initial. Here are the favorites.
- Kisses and sign-offs. "xx" or "xoxo" at the end of a message gets a softer feel in script, like 𝓍𝓍.
- Name initials. A bold script 𝓧 or a gothic 𝖃 makes a rare, memorable monogram for anyone named Xavier or Xin.
- Gaming and "X" tags. Squad names like "xXShadowXx" use a fancy X on each side. Count characters, since decorated letters can use two each.
- Collabs. Brand team-ups are often written with an X between names, like "Studio 𝐗 Bloom". A bold X keeps it clear.
- Lists and checks. ✗ and ✘ mark a "no" in a pros-and-cons list, while × is the real multiplication sign for math posts.
X in Different Fonts: Choosing an X Font
Since X is just two crossing lines, most X font styles are easy to read. The trick is picking one that doesn't get mistaken for a symbol.
- Bold and sans bold (𝐗, 𝗫): clearly a letter, even in a busy bio. The safest X font.
- Cursive script (𝒳, 𝓍): the script lowercase x is made of two curves back to back, which looks very elegant. To write it by hand, see the cursive X guide.
- Double struck (𝕏, 𝕩): the outlined 𝕏 looks a lot like the logo of the X platform, which makes it a popular pick on that app.
- Small caps (x): Unicode has no small capital X, so this style simply uses a normal lowercase x.
- Upside down and mirror (X, x): X is symmetrical both ways, so it looks the same flipped or mirrored.
Facts About the Letter X
X came into the Latin alphabet from a Greek letter shape, and in Greek, the similar-looking chi (Χ, χ) is the first letter of Christ. That's why "Xmas" is a short form of Christmas with a long history, not a modern shortcut.
X is one of the least used letters in English, and very few English words begin with it. Most that do, like "xylophone" and "xenon", come from Greek and start with a Z sound.
In math, x is the classic unknown, a habit made popular by the French thinker René Descartes in the 1600s. As a Roman numeral, X means ten, and on treasure maps, X marks the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I copy a fancy X?
Tap or click any X on this page. It's copied instantly. Paste it with a long press on your phone or Ctrl+V on a computer.
Is × the same as the letter x?
No. × is the multiplication sign, a separate character. It looks great in math and in collab names, but search engines and apps won't treat it as the letter x.
Why is there no small caps X?
Unicode never added a small capital X, so fancy text tools use a regular lowercase x, which already has a similar shape.
Why does a stylish x show as a box?
The device viewing your text has no font for that character. Bold, italic and script X letters are the most widely supported.
Can I write my whole name in an x font?
Yes. Type it into our fancy text generator and copy your favorite style.
